Halal Food and Prayer in Diani and Malindi: What the Hotels Told Us

By Amana Guides · 2 November 2026

Kenya’s coast has the country’s oldest Muslim communities, and many travellers assume that means every beach hotel will cook halal and understand prayer. Some do. Some don’t, and you can’t tell from the brochure.

We wrote to the coast hotels with the same six questions we put to every property in our guide, and eleven hotels in Diani and Malindi answered for themselves in writing. This is what they said, hotel by hotel. We report their answers and do not rule on them: we have not inspected kitchens, and where a hotel described its meat as certified, that is the hotel’s own description.

Not every coast hotel serves halal food. At least one told us plainly that it does not. That is exactly why it is worth asking in writing before you book, and why we print the answers.

Diani

Eleven Pearl Boutique Hotel & Spa

Halal meat is offered with no arrangement needed, and the hotel said no advance notice is required. It wrote that its restaurant is halal and that Muslim chefs on its team make sure halal meals are prepared and handled correctly. Alcohol is served only on request, and the hotel has a bar.

Flamboyant Diani

Halal meat is offered with no arrangement needed. It named its suppliers as Farmers Choice, Maggies Butchery, Anglo Meat Products and Black Steer, and wrote that all the meat it serves is halal “with the exception of the sea fish”. Alcohol is served only on request. Some staff know the qibla direction, but the hotel does not provide prayer mats and has no dedicated prayer room.

Swahili Beach Resort

Halal meat is offered with no arrangement needed. The resort wrote that “all meat served across our dining outlets is halal-certified as standard”. That is its own statement, and we have not checked it. It has a bar.

Waterlovers Beach Resort

The resort said its meats come from certified halal butchers and named Chandarana Foodplus, Farmers Choice and Carrefour as suppliers. It did not say who certifies the butchers. It has a separate bar, and alcohol is also served at tables or in rooms at a guest’s request. Guests pray in their rooms, the majority of staff are Muslim, and it can offer a prayer mat on request. It did not say whether staff know the qibla; our own calculation puts it very nearly due north there. It said it often hosts Muslim guests and asks for nothing in advance unless a guest has a specific request.

Villa Mandhari Diani Beach

Halal meat is offered with no arrangement needed. Alcohol is not served with meals: the hotel has a bar, and its rooftop lounge is where alcohol is served.

Nomad Beach Resort

Halal meat is arranged on request, and the resort asked for the details before check-in so it can make the arrangements. Alcohol is served only on request, and there is a bar.

Malindi

Jumeirah Malindi Hotel & Restaurant

Halal meat is offered with no arrangement needed, and the hotel wrote: “We are a Muslim hotel and serve halal meat to our guests.” Alcohol is not served with meals. It has a space for prayer, its staff know the qibla, and every room has a prayer mat.

Diamonds Malindi and Sandies Tropical Village

The two hotels answered in one reply: “we do provide halal meat always”. The reply also said there are bars in the hotel.

Q Boutique Resort Malindi

Halal meat is arranged on request, and alcohol is served only on request.

What this means when you book

  • “No arrangement needed” and “arranged on request” are different promises. Where it is arranged on request, send your dates and dietary needs early and get the reply in writing.
  • Alcohol is rarely absent, but it is often only on request. Ask how the dining area works. One hotel keeps alcohol to a rooftop lounge.
  • Bring a prayer mat if it matters. Several hotels can lend one, but at least one does not provide them and has no prayer room.
  • Staff knowledge of the qibla varies. A compass or a qibla app removes the question. In Diani, the qibla is close to due north.

This is a summary. The guide covers every Diani, Malindi and Watamu property that answered, with the date and the person who answered printed next to each one, so you can check it against what the hotel tells you now.
